Skills Support for the Workforce

Free training for Somerset businesses is available through the Skills for Growth project, run by Serco with the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

Serco is working with local colleges and other training providers to provide training in a number of key sectors identified by the LEP, for SMEs of less than 250 employees and staff aged 19 or above. The sectors are:

  • Marine Engineering
  • Advanced Engineering
  • Biosciences and Health
  • Business Services
  • Professional Services
  • Environmental Services
  • Construction

Apprenticeship Grant for Employers

The Apprenticeship Grant for Employers for Apprentices aged 16 to 24 (AGE 16 to 24), provides financial support to employers new to Apprenticeships. Employers with less than 1000 employees, who are new to Apprenticeships or haven’t enrolled a new recruit or existing employee onto an Apprenticeship programme in the previous 12 months are eligible for a grant of  £1,500 for each apprentice employed, up to a maximum of ten grants.

GAIN Business Support

GAIN, the Growth, Acceleration and Investment Network supports businesses across the South West to accelerate the creation, growth and investment in high quality businesses and ideas. GAIN is intended to provide a one-stop-shop joining up the existing range of business services, assets and facilities to make them focused and accessible. The website has a grant finder for businesses looking for funding and a facility to ask questions and receive answers from the business community.
